Seattle Mariners Notes, Quotes 2009-05-05
--3B Adrian Beltre was the cleanup hitter for the first 25 games of the season. In Game 26, however, he was moved to fifth, switching places with 1B Russell Branyan. Beltre's average has picked up a little lately, but he came into Monday at .216 while Branyan had nine hits in his previous 23 at-bats (.391). It's not clear whether or not the switch is a one-time event for manager Don Wakamatsu.--RHP Denny Stark, promoted from the minor leagues on Saturday, pitched in Sunday's game, getting two outs in the seventh inning. It was the first game in the big leagues for Stark since 2005. He'd undergone two Tommy John surgeries on his right elbow since then and went more than 2-1/2 years without pitching in a game of any sort.
BY THE NUMBERS: 5-1 -- Mariners' record, through Sunday, when 1B Russell Branyan has two or more hits in a game this season.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I thought being called up to the big leagues this first time was great. This is better." -- RHP Denny Stark, promoted from Class AAA Tacoma (Wash.) to Seattle Saturday (May 2) after having not pitched in the big leagues since 2005 because of back-to-back Tommy John surgeries.
