Seattle Mariners Notes, Quotes 2009-09-07

--RF Ichiro Suzuki reached 2,000 career hits in his 1,402nd major league game with a double in the first inning Sunday in Oakland. Ichiro is the second fastest ever to 2,000 hits, bested only by Hall of Famer Al Simmons, who did it in 1,390 games. Ichiro is now five hits short of a major meague record ninth consecutive 200-hit season, and could get it this week in Anaheim. Six of his previous eight 200th hits came on the road.

--RHP Doug Fister, who hails from about 100 miles southeast of Oakland, had close to 100 family members and friends in the stands for his professional first start in the Bay Area. Fister developed a blister in the third inning and left the game early after five innings because of it. He left with a 2-1 lead, although the Mariners ultimately lost the game.

BY THE NUMBERS: 33 of 34 -- The Mariners are off Monday after having played on 33 of the previous 34 days (they flew from Seattle to Detroit on the one off day). Seattle was 18-15 in that stretch.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "3,000 is going to depend on him and his ability to stay healthy, but I think he will get there." -- Manager Don Wakamatsu on RF Ichiro Suzuki on the occasion of Ichiro's 2,000th career hit Sunday.
